While this site is named in honor of the concoction of the same name, the purpose of this site is to discuss the overall impact of the Opium Poppy rather than to encourage its use recreationally. It should be noted that while a simple plant may seem inocuous, our brains are literally wired to respond to its alkaloids via our opioid receptors. Humanity has a long history with the poppy — so long our bodies have evolved to specifically respond to it. However with that response comes great risk. While it may seem like a bit of fun at first, Poppy Tea is very addictive and the possibility for overdose and death is very real. We at poppytea.org do not recommend anyone experiment with this concoction, as even experienced opiate addicts have found themselves wishing they had never turned to the “more natural” version of their drug of choice. Beware.
Not to be confused with Poppy Seed Tea, Poppy Pod Tea is a narcotic infusion made from the dried poppy pods of Papaver Somniferum — the opium poppy. Opium poppies naturally produce opium as a defense against predators, and its alkaloids have a long history of use in medicine and as an intoxicating drug. In the live flower, opium is released when the surface of the bulb, called the seed pod, is scratched. For the purpose of tea, dried pods are more commonly used than the pods of the live flower.
There are many different preparations of poppy tea. Most methods call for the straw to be ground into a fine powder — a fine powder is needed because most of the opium latex is located within the cell walls of the pod. The seeds are discarded because they do not contain a high enough alkaloid content (there are dozens of poppy seed tea recipes however).
The French Press Method Poppy Tea Recipe
A quick and efficient method is to use a stovetop espresso maker or a french press. The french press method is presented below:
- Using a powerful blender or coffee grinder grind up the amount of dried pods that suit you best. Grind to a coarse powder as you would for French press coffee
- Place the grinds in the bottom of the Bodum
- Boil a kettle of water
- While waiting for the kettle, soak the powder with lemon or lime juice for about 10 minutes
- Once the kettle has come to a boil, take it off of the element and wait for a minute
- Then add the water to the Bodum
- Press the plunger up and down repeatedly, not to hard or vigorously you don’t want to make a mess or break anything
- Next bring the plunger back up to the top and let stand for 10-30 minutes
- Before you plunge it down for the last time stir the mixture and then plunge
- Finally add the tea to your mug…sweeten with honey or brown sugar and viola!
The Stove Top Method of Brewing Poppy Tea
- Take your supply of poppy pods and grind them in a coffee grinder to create as fine a powder as possible. Mix the powder into a homogenous product, so as to account for variations in potency between one pod and the next.
- Measure out five pods worth of powder. If you are using more “potent” strains such as hens and chickens, start with perhaps two. If you have a high tolerance to opiates, you can try more. But always remember to start SMALL. It’s always better to waste some pods than to overdose!
- Boil two cups of water on the stove. Once the water is boiling, remove from the heat and add your powdered pods. Do not boil the pods!
- Stir occasionally, allowing around 10-15 minutes for the tea to “steep”, and cool.
- Pour the contents through a strainer or cheesecloth into a mug. Save the used pulp from the strainer, as it can be used again, although at about half the strength. Only use one cup of water when doing a re-brew.
- Drink the mixture, including any powdery residue left at the bottom of your mug, as it will also contain alkaloids. Waste not want not!
Many people simply cannot stand the taste of the tea. It can be quite horrible in fact, especially if you can’t handle bitter flavours well. Some people like to add some honey or sugar to their tea to mask the flavour. Others say that mixing the tea with Orange Juice can totally mask the flavour, without reducing the effects. In the end, it’s up to you.
Remember, as with any opiate based substance, it is possible to both overdose and become addicted to poppy tea. So use caution! It’s always better not to start at all, but if you must, it is imperative that you treat these powerful substances with the respect that they deserve.

Risk of Addiction and Overdose
Opium poppy pod tea consists of many chemicals that affect the human body. The most notable of the opium alkaloids are morphine and codeine. Both are narcotic in their effects, with morphine being the more potent of the two. Opiates are highly addictive drugs, and when ingesting them via poppy pod tea you cannot be certain from one batch of pods to the next how potent your dose will be. Just because one batch took five pods to work, doesn’t mean the next batch will be the same. Always grind your pods in large batches to produce a homogenous product and test with small amounts first! If you overdose, there is a very real and well documented risk of death. There danger of overdose with poppy tea is very real. Do not let the fact that it is a “natural” product deceive you — there have been several examples of fatal overdoses documented in the news over the past decade. Poppy tea addiction can be more difficult to kick than even heroin due to the added synergistic effects of the various other alkaloids found in tea. You have been warned!
